The principle of ability and age grouping is fundamental to Special Olympics. It leads to meaningful inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities on teams, a chance to be contributing teammates, and the potential to make friendships with people from whom they have traditionally been segregated. Unified sports programs are springing up in communities worldwide through parks and recreation departments, civic organizations, private and public schools, colleges, group home agencies, state institutions, corporations, bowling proprietors, running clubs and other sports organizations. There are a few basic principles and practices, which make Unified Sports work: Ability Grouping The more similar the skill level of all athletes on a team, the greater chance each athlete will play a valued and meaningful role on that team. Age Grouping The smaller the age range of all participants, the greater the chance that age appropriate sport selection, friendships and activities on and off the field or court will occur. Training Teammates are required to practice together on a regular basis. This results in skill development, improved teamwork, better fitness and camaraderie created by working towards a common goal. Competition Teams should have many opportunities to test and display their skills in competitions. Unified Sports rules are similar, with minor modifications to the sports rules commonly used by schools and community sport programs. Participation on a Unified Sports Team facilitates transition into other community and school sports activities. GOALS OF UNIFIED SPORTS 1. To assist agencies and school systems in offering sports programs that include athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. 2. To provide team sports opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities who are not presently involved in sports, especially those with mild mental retardation who may be sensitive to participating in traditional Special Olympics sports, and those in communities where there are not enough Special Olympics athletes to conduct team sports. TIPS FOR UNIFIED TEAMS Team practice is just as important, if not more important, for Unified Team Sports. Practice sessions are the ideal opportunity for team members to get to know one another and assess the relative skills of various team members. Schedule as many practices as possible, and certainly not fewer than two two-hour sessions, before starting competition. Remember that all Unified Team members should be closely matched in age - within three to five years for participants 18 and under and 10 years for participants 19 and over. Avoid letting one or more players dominate a team, thus depriving other players the fullest chance to participate. Coaches should replace overly dominant players before team competition starts and referees should disqualify an overly dominant player in a game. It is a judgment call based on doing the most good for all participants. Inform athletes without intellectual disabilities that they are covered by Special Olympics International's accident insurance policy. Unified Partners aged 18 and over, must complete an Adult Volunteer & Unified Partner Application form at least every three years. These applicants will be subjected to a criminal records check, and where applicable, a motor vehicle records check. Unified Partners under the age of 18 must submit a Minor Volunteer & Unified Partner Application form to the State Office. This form must include two personal or professional references and a Parental/Guardian release. A-16 ATHLETE MEDICAL RELEASE FORMS (FORM A) In order for an athlete to be properly trained for competition, a minimum of eight weeks of organized training is required. Before beginning training, it is the agency/school representative's responsibility to ensure that each athlete has a correctly completed Application For Participation In Special Olympics (Form A) on file with Special Olympics South Dakota state office. As indicated on the Application For Participation In Special Olympics (Form A), athletes are required to be examined by his/her physician a minimum of every 3 years. However, it is at the physician discretion to request an examination prior to the 3 years. Please check the form carefully to be sure of the expiration date of the medicals. If an athlete was previously registered with Special Olympics South Dakota, but their medical form expires prior to the first day of competition, a new Medical Form must be completed correctly and filed with the state office prior to competition. It is the responsibility of the agency/school representative to keep accurate records of medical expiration dates. Please give sufficient notice to family members, guardians, school personnel, etc. that an athlete's medical form needs to be renewed. Forms must be complete in order to be considered valid. Medical forms other than the Application For Participation In Special Olympics (Form A) are not transferable or acceptable. This includes High School Physical Forms. Athletes with Down Syndrome may be required to complete Form B: Special Release for Athletes with Atlanto-Axial Instability. (pg B-6 and B-7) There is evidence from medical research that up to 15% of individuals with Down Syndrome have a misalignment of the cervical vertebrae C-1 and C-2 in the neck. This condition exposes Down Syndrome individuals to the possibility of injury if they participate in activities that hyper-extend or radically flex the neck or upper spine. If an athlete with Down Syndrome is participating in the following sports, they are required to have X-rays taken and the Atlanto-axial Instability medical form completed and returned to the State Office before the athlete starts training in the restricted sport. The restricted events are: artistic gymnastics, pentathlon, butterfly stroke in aquatics, high jump, soccer, alpine skiing, equestrian, powerlifting and any warm-up exercises placing undue stress on the head and neck muscles. Note: It is the responsibility of Coaches/Chaperones to have copies of all physicals, i.e. Application For Participation In Special Olympics (Form A) in their possession during all practices and Special Olympics events. APPROPRIATE SPORTS/EVENTS SELECTION FOR ATHLETES What would have happened if someone selected the sports that you played in high school or community leagues and you were told that you had no other choice? Would you have stayed as a member of the football team, cross country team, or the bowling team, if you were told that you had to? Do you think you would have looked forward to practice? Competition? One of the most important factors that influence an athlete's motivation in sports is having a choice in selecting the sport in which he/she wants to take part. The Special Olympics athlete is no different. The problem is that there are many people who play a role in the selection process and that may, in fact, create more obstacles to overcome. It is important for coaches to recognize these obstacles and to do everything possible to allow their athletes to compete in sports in which they will learn and develop skills, and most important of all, have fun. A-17 Variables that Influence the Selection of Sports AGE APPROPRIATENESS - While physical developmental needs may be a primary concern, athletes may need some guidance in selecting a sport appropriate for their age. READINESS LEVEL - A Special Olympics athlete needs to be ready for competition both mentally and physically. Mental Readiness - Athletes must want to play and understand the concept of the game. There should be a desire to participate and a level of confidence to experience success. Physical Readiness - Athletes must be physically fit. Athletes must develop fitness levels required for successful participation in the sport selected. ABILITY LEVEL - Coaches know that there is a minimal skill level required for participation in competition for each and every sport offered in Special Olympics. Athletes must demonstrate these skill levels in order to compete according to the rules and ensure safe participation. ATHLETE PREFERENCE - An athlete should be offered every opportunity to select the sport in which he/she will participate, however, this freedom of choice may need to be supervised by the coach. All factors must be considered. PEER INFLUENCE - Athletes may select a sport because a friend is participating in it. The element of socialization is a goal of athletes who train and compete in Special Olympics. On the other hand, an athlete who participates in a sport "just because his/her friends play" may require direction from the coach. Other Factors: Budget - How much money will facilities, equipment, uniforms, etc. cost? Trained Coaches - Do you have enough volunteer coaches who know the sport? How about the athlete who selects aquatics and you have no coaches who swim? Facilities - While a gymnasium may fit the budget, can you get access to tennis courts? Ice time? A pool? Equipment - A sufficient amount of proper equipment is required for every sport selected. Do you have the necessary equipment? Is it safe to use? Administrative Support - Will your administration support your efforts to develop a team? Do they encourage athletes to take full advantage of all opportunities? Family Support - At-home training, transportation to practices and competitions, and moral support from family members are all necessary for successful participation in Special Olympics. Are your athletes' families involved in Special Olympics? Time - How much time do you have? Can you compromise selections of sports and the time available to volunteer? Who selects the sport for an athlete? There are no clear-cut rules. Knowing that all of these variables exist, however, will allow you to help your athletes select the sport in which they will experience the most success and enjoyment. A-18 ()Zf & ' H I > ?
