Training

People with Intellectual Disabilities frequently share the following general characteristics:

  • Processing and learning occurs at a slower rate.
  • Attention span is short.
  • Onset before the person turned 18.


  • Training Strategies to Affect Learning:
  • Train for short periods of time.
  • Provide repetition (key to athlete gaining new skill development).
  • When training, think of athletes as literal thinkers.


  • Verbal Communication Difficulties or Not at All
  • Allow for additional time to express thoughts
  • Use picture boards/other assistive devices
  • Ask him or her to demonstrate or show what he/she means


  • Short Attention Span
  • Train for short periods of time
  • Provide repetition and review (key to gaining new skill)
  • Work one-on-one (gain full attention)


  • Resistance to Change
  • Provide clear and continuous transitions
  • Establish routines (enforce concept of flexibility)
  • Build on successes


  • Blind
  • Use many verbal cues
  • Provide action-specific feedback
  • Hand-over-hand demonstration may be needed


  • Deaf
  • Establish eye contact when talking
  • Use signs, pictures or American Sign Language
  • Demonstrate what is desired
