A chance to compete, to grow, to learn, to inspire

Athletics are the core of the Special Olympics movement. Special Olympics continues to strive to create new and innovative programming that celebrates the achievements of people with mental retardation or a closely related developmental disability and welcomes participants from everyone -- giving us all the opportunity to Inspire Greatness.

Today, more than a million children and adults with mental retardation worldwide benefit from Special Olympics year-round sports training and competition.  In addition, to having a great time, a recent Yale University study found that Special Olympics athletes benefit from:

bullet

Improved physical fitness and sports skills

bullet

 Enhanced self-confidence and social competency

bullet

 Greater readiness for employment

bullet

 Better preparation for independent living

bullet

Increased ability to make personal decisions

bullet

 Improved friendships and family relationships

Both on and off the playing field, Special Olympics provides training for life.
